MICROSOFT LETS SLIP NEW NOKIA

Nokia's Sea Ray may not be its very-first Windows Phone 7 handset, but it will certainly be one of the first introduced by the manufacturer. Thanks to what looks like an inadvertent leak on the part of Microsoft's Canadian division, we have an idea of what another one of Nokia's first WP7 devices may be, as well as a couple due from Samsung.

Buried in the legalese describing the terms and conditions of a Mango app promotion the company is running, we find a short list of Mango phones being offered as prizes. There's the Sea Ray, of course, accompanied by the Nokia Sabre, Samsung Wembley, and Samsung Yukon.

It's new to us, but apparently the name "Sabre" has popped up very sporadically in discussions ofWindows Phone devices over the past several months. Even if it's name was known by some, no one's come forward with any reliable information about the hardware.

Samsung's Yukon and Wembley are a bit more mysterious. They're likely referring to a Samsung model we've already heard of, like the Omnia W or Focus Flash, but which? A little digging-around has turned up some specs which make it look like the Samsung Wembley will be a 1.5GHz device with a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED WVGA screen, five-megapixel main camera, and VGA front-facer. Those are close to the specs we're expecting for some Samsung Mango phones, but aren't perfect matches; we'll need to see some more evidence before we can confirm their identities.

TWO HIGH MEGAPIXEL ANDROIDS

Dell's Streak Pro isn't the only newly-announced Android on its way to Japanese carrier SoftBank. We've also heard of new models on the way from Panasonic and Sharp, both with some quite-high-resolution cameras.

Panasonic will be bringing the carrier its Lumix 101P with a nice big lens and 13.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor. The Android will arrive running Gingerbread, and is powered by a 1GHz dual-core TI processor. Its display measures-in at four inches, and will be in qHD. Waterproofing certification will let you risk a little moisture while trying to snap the perfect shot.

Sharp's Aquos 102SH is also driven by a dual-core 1GHz TI chip and has waterproofing, but its camera is just a bit lower-res at 12 megapixels, and it doesn't have quite the elaborate lens of the Lumix. What it does offer is a full 720p 4.5-inch display with autostereoscopic 3D effects. Again, look for Gingerbread on-board.

There's a chance that the Aquos could find a home outside Japan in the future, but there's no word regarding the Lumix. That one should hit Japan in November, with the Aquos following in December.

SAMSUNG ANNOUNCES 16 MP IMAGE SENSOR FOR SMARTPHONES

We've heard about plans for a 16-megapixel smartphone camera from HTC, one that would end up as a WP7 device, but we've yet to see that puppy materialize. Sharp's AQUOS 007SH features such a sensor, but they're far from common at the moment. We may be ready to see a whole lot more smartphones step-up their cameras to this kind of megapixel excess, thanks to Samsung's development of a new 16-megapixel sensor.

Samsung announced its S5K2P1 chip that will bring 16-megapixel performance to stand-alone cameras, camcorders, and most importantly smartphones. The sensor itself is a 1/2.3-inch component and uses backside illumination for extra-low-noise performance. The chip is capable of taking a full-frame, 16-megapixel shot at 30fps, and can handle 60fps video at a still-very-impressive 8.3-megapixel resolution; keep in mind, 1080p video is only 2.1-megapixel.

It's no secret that there's a whole lot more contributing to image quality than just megapixel count, and pictures taken with a high-resolution sensor that's too small, or one that isn't paired with a good-quality, large lens, will fail to impress. As a result, it's easy to accuse the manufacturers of these higher-and-higher resolution sensors as just perpetuating the "megapixel myth", but that's not entirely fair; so long as we let smartphone companies know that we want handsets with quality optics, in addition to high-res sensors, there's no reason a 16-megapixel can't be a welcome addition to a phone.

DELL CONFIRMS XPS 14

Remember that XPS 14z Dell teased at IFA? Yeah, well, it's arriving soon. As in, "the coming weeks" soon. The company just confirmed it's on the cusp of shipping here in the states, and while the outfit stopped short of giving a starting price, it's good and ready to talk specs. As we reported last month, it has the same industrial design as its big brother, the XPS 15z, and we're told it, too, measures less than an inch thick (0.9 inches, to be precise). With the 14-incher, though, you'll enjoy LG's Shuriken display, which means we have one narrow bezel to look forward to. Look for it with a Core i5-2430M or Core i7-2640M CPU, NVIDIA Optimus graphics, a slot-loading optical drive, USB 3.0 and a starting weight of 4.36 pounds (that's 4.12 pounds if you upgrade to an SSD). You heard the company -- we'll get the full spill in a few weeks -- but for now, skip past the break for another sneak peak.

Update: You want dimensions? We've got 'em. The XPS 14z measures 13.19 x 9.21 x 0.9 inches (335 x 234 x 23mm).

Is RIM Killing the Blackberry Playbook?

The tablet market is getting increasingly competitive. Apple, the first major entrant in the tablet market, is still ruling it with a market share of around 80%. Android hasn’t yet been able to replicate its smartphone success in tablets just yet, and Microsoft is yet to enter the tablet market. It will launch Windows 8 only in 2012, and risks being late to the party.
Amazon launched a new $199 Android tablet — the Kindle Fire — yesterday, which is expected to change the game. In my opinion, it will kill off any competition in the low end of the tablet market which is currently dominated by Chinese OEMs, while affecting iPad sales only marginally.

RIM which foolishly priced its lackluster offering — the Blackberry Playbook — at the same price as theiPad, has been seeing continually dropping sales. Last quarter, it shipped just 200,000 tablets, which is about the number that Apple sells in a couple of days.
With Amazon’s Kindle Fire, RIM is starting to feel the heat, and according to a report by BGR, it has finally pulled the plug on the Blackberry Playbook. Sources at Quanta, RIM’s manufacturing partner reveal that it has laid off a lot of workers working on the Playbook, essentially halting the production of the tablet. While RIM hasn’t confirmed the news, it seems quite plausible.

I hope RIM holds a firesale for its remaining Playbook inventory too, just like HP did for the TouchPad. I would definitely buy one for $99.
Update from WSJ: Apparently, RIM isn’t killing the Playbook. In an email statement, it said that the report was “pure fiction”, and that it “remains highly committed to the tablet market.”

MOBILE DEVICES MICROSOFT NEW BUSSINESS

Microsoft has been struggling to get marketshare in mobile devices. Android and iOS based phone/tablets are crushing Windows. Then there is the consistent Microsoft stock price and revenues. Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division (EDD) posted staggering results courtesy the Xbox 360 and Kinect (2011 fiscal reports). SeattlePi’s Nick Eaton observed that the rest of EDD revenue is approximately $600 Million. This number includes sales from Zune, Surface, Mediaroom and hardware.

Yesterday, before Amazon joined the cool consumer tech companies, the top news was Samsung and Microsoft signing a patent deal for Samsung’s Android devices. Goldman Sachs estimates that Microsoft is set to make $444 Million from the various Android patent deals with several OEMs. Now, realizing that Windows Phone isn’t the one making $600 Million but making a considerable contribution to the number and $444 Million from Android devices, Microsoft’s investments in mobile devices are bringing them close to a Billion Dollars.

GOOGLE LATEST UPDATE | GOOGLE ANALYTICS CHANGES | GOOGLE UPDATES | LATEST UPDATES TO GOOGLE

Google Analytics has definitely been one of the best services to track your website visitors. However, it has been lacking a key feature that most of its competitors like Woopra and Reinvigorate have been offering for a while now; Realtime tracking.

Realtime user tracking is a very important feature for any webmaster who wants to track campaigns in realtime without having to wait. This helps users to make business decisions quickly if something is not working. Unfortunately, prior to today, Google never had this feature.

However, that is about to change because Google has announced a new feature for Analytics which will help you track your visitors in realtime and make business decisions quickly. The new feature in Google Analytics will allow users to track how many visitors are currently visiting the site, how many users have visited in the last few minutes as well as the number of visitors visiting your website every second.
Additionally, Google Analytics will also display the source for traffic and the keywords users are using and the geographic locations they are visiting from. As a webmaster, this is a pretty cool feature since I can now just use Google Analytics instead of using other realtime analytics tracking services.
Google has definitely been ramping up their analytic services with the introduction of Google Analytics 5which brought about a new UI, dashboard, widgets and more. Additionally, Google has also been adding some neat features to Google Analytics like heatmaps and in-page analytics among other things.

LATEST HTC HOLIDAY LATEST PICTURES LEAKED

Australian carrier Telstra has revealed this 4.5-inch colossus from HTC, and the above picture fromCNET shows it's likely to arrive under its Holiday moniker. This is the first LTE smartphone announced for Australia, while something similarly tall, dark and Android recently arrived in Korea as the HTC Raider 4G. CNET reports specs that tally with that other model: the big screen is qHD and the power comes from a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU coupled with 1GB of RAM. Like the Raider, the Holiday appears to be running Sense 3.0, not the refreshed 3.5 iteration that debuted on the Rhyme, and it looks primed to be one of the first handsets to launch on AT&T's brand new 4G network. So, expect to hear more from Ma Bell on this "titanic" rival soon.

MICROSOFT ANNOUNCES NEW $10 ZUNE MUSIC PASS

It may not enjoy quite the same level of buzz that the likes of Spotify, Rdio and MOG have been basking in lately, but Microsoft's Zune service is still kicking, and the company's now working to make it a bit more appealing and more widely available. For folks in the US, the big change today is a new $10 per month Zune Music Pass, which is identical to the existing $15 service with the notable exception that you no longer get to keep ten free MP3s each month (that $15 option remains available to existing subscribers, though). Elsewhere, Microsoft has also now finally brought the Zune Marketplace and Zune Pass to Canada -- it opens up on October 3rd, with the Zune Pass running the same $10/month (or $100 for a year of service).

SEVEN INCH HUAWEI TABLET

tablet headed to T-Mobile, priced at $200 on contract?

It looks like T-Mobile is getting a seven-inch stablemate for the incoming Galaxy Tab 10.1. According to these shots from TmoNews, Huawei's dual-core MediaPad will arrive in magenta clothing, though branding is limited to a few apps and an additional press shot, included after the break. Aside from a 1280 x 800 IPS display and 4G goodness, details remain sketchy, though pricing is expected to be around $200 with a two-year agreement. No word either when it'll go on sale, but if Huawei's earlier promises of end-of-year availability apply to carrier-branded versions, you can expect to get your hands on it at some (vague) point between now and 2012.

BAN OF BMW AND AUDI

LG seeks ban on South Korean BMW and Audi sales, sticks out its LED lit tongue at Osram

Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in a world where we all just got along, people worked for the thrill of it, and knowledge was free? Yeah, fat chance dreamers. 'Sue', our new millennium's most oft-used verb, is getting some heavy play at the hands of the tech industry. The latest court room combatants? Why, that'd be LG Group and Osram. You see, once upon a time LG was late to the LED patent game, and was content to fork over the cash to Osram for use of its tech. Skip to now, and the electronics giant's claiming it can get its lighting goods elsewhere, picking from a plethora of relevant IP-holding companies and combining that with its own patents. Despite having already countersued Osram in July to prevent the import of that company's allegedly infringing products into South Korea, LG's gathered its legal arsenal once again to block the sale of Audis and BMWs throughout the entire country -- cars that include Osram's LED tech. It's hard to imagine the courts would grant such a wide-sweeping ban on major auto players' bread-and-butter. And all grandstanding aside, it's more likely the two fisticuffing parties will come to some sort of revised financial agreement.

Flickr unveils Android app

introduces real-time Photo Session feature

The Android community may be awaiting its very own Instagram app, but at least Flickr has now stepped up to fill the void. Yesterday, the photo-sharing service unveiled its very first Android app, along with a new social feature known as Photo Session. Available for free on the Android Market, the app allows users to snap, filter and upload their photos directly to Facebook, Twitter or Flickr, all from the comfort of their own handset. It also features an array of camera functions like flash, ratio selection, and shutter focus, along with ten high-quality filters. Photo Session, meanwhile, allows you to browse through images with your friends in real-time. All you have to do is round up your online comrades, start a session and begin flipping through a photostream. Every time you move on to the next image, your friends will, too, effectively turning any browsing affair into a collective, Don Draper-like slide show.

Sony’s ‘PlayStation Certified’ Tablet S is now up for preorder, will set you back $689

Sony Australia has just sent through an email advising the Sony Tablet S is now available for pre-order in Australia. If you do this before October 19th they`ll throw in a bonus Charging Cradle and free shipping, with units beginning to ship October 21st. More after the break
They focus on the ergonomics of the tablet, which I personally like the idea of, I just can`t wait to actually hold one. Seen here is the wedge and how it relates to what looks like a more natural feel in the hand:

The wedge is at a 4° angle when rested flat on a bench, personally I can`t wait to try to see how it feels and at 598gm it seems light enough compared with other tablets of similar screen size out there, also the charging cradle they`re throwing in would probably look pretty decent on the desk, throw in a BlueTooth keyboard and you`re set.

Specifications :
  • Android 3.2
  • 1GHz Dual Core NVIDIA® Tegra™ 2 mobile processor
  • 9.4″ wide (WXGA: 1280 x 800) TFT Colour LCD
  • 1Gb RAM
  • 16Gb for $579 or 32Gb for $689
  • GPS/Bluetooth® standard Ver. 2.1/IEEE 802.11b/g/n
  • Accelerometer (3-axis accelerometer), Gyro, Digital Compass, Ambient Light Sensor
  • IR Remote control function (Writers Note : YES!!!)
  • SD memory card
  • VGA Front Facking camera(640×480:0.3Mp) and a rear HD camera powered by “Exmor for mobile” (Resolution: 2592 x 2944, Effective Pixels @ 5 Mega pixels)
  • Built-in stereo speakers and monaural microphone
  • Built-in regchargeable battery pack which they say can get 6 hours of video playing, 5 hours to charge the battery though.
  • And weighing in at 598gm
The Tablet S is a PlayStation™ Certified device so you can play all the Playstation games in the market like Crash Bandicoot, I can`t wait to see Sony expand the possibilities of the PlayStation™ Certified devices and make a larger amount of games available, there are some decent ones on there but there was at least over 1200 released for the PSOne and if we could get a larger portion of those games added plus add the option to connect a PS3 controller to play them with, the Asus Transformer has this capability
Personally i`m really interested in the IR Remote control function this would be fantastic as a remote control, they give a basic overview of it here but i`d like to know if this can also control the PS3 which is a BlueTooth based remote control but i`m hoping it does.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray now available from Vodafone, $5/mo on $45 Infinite Plan

Sony Ericsson’s new Xperia Ray is now available for purchase on a 24 month plan from Vodafone. The device finds itself sitting on Vodafone’s $45/mo Infinite Plan with $5/mo repayments. In terms of specs, Matty says it feels like a smaller version of the Xperia Arc, which to me sounds absolutely epic. So what are the specs exactly? They go a little something like this..
  • 3.3-inch 854×480 (that’s 297ppi!) Reality Display w/ Sony Mobile BRAVIA® Engine
  • Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’
  • 8.1MP Rear Camera (shoots 720p) / Front Camera

  • Sony Ericsson xLoud and TrackID
  • 9.4mm thick

HTC EXPLORER GOES OFFICIAL

This little soldier carries the big responsibility of extending HTC's dominance to the budget end of the Android spectrum, and it must achieve this mission with only a bare minimum of weaponry: a 3.2-inch HVGA (480 x 320) capacitive display, 600MHz processor, 3MP camera and 512MB of expandable memory. You'll just have to believe us when we say we had a play with a pre-release device at an HTC event recently, even though the manufacturer's reps refused to let us take any photos or video to prove it. You'll find publicity shots in the gallery below plus a full press release, some educated guesswork about price and availability and our initial impressions of the handset right after the break.

Update: The UK's Three network has confirmed it will stock the device, but it hasn't divulged the price.

INDIA'S TABLET AT $35 | LATEST TABLET IN INDIA | TABLET IN INDIA | LOWEST PRICE TABLET IN INDIA

This mysterious $35 tablet has broken our hearts, crushed our fantasies and even made unicorns cry with delay after delay. Today, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal assured us that the much anticipated slate willbe released on October 5th -- promising that this time, "[It's] not just a dream." Evidently, the tablet has overcome the manufacturing problems that plagued the project previously and now production is proceeding according to a new plan. That means that five, seven and nine inch slates are said to be shipping to lucky Indian students in early October -- sadly, both the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot have advised us not to hold our breath.

DISNEY LAUNCHES 2 NEW ANDROID SMARTPHONES

Mickey's ditching the steamboat and giving up Fantasia in pursuit of all things mobile as Disney launches the DM011SH and DM010SH -- joining the company's other Android offering. The 4-inch 3D capable DM010SH handset will be Walt's top-of-the-line variant with a 960 x 540 qHD touchscreen, 8MP camera and a 1GHz processor. Next in line is the DM011SH waterproof slider with a 3.4-inch touchscreen sporting 854 X 480 resolution and an identical processor and camera to its higher-end cousin. Both Android 2.3 phones come decorated with the signature insignia in tweentastic candy colors like pink and white, with a black version of the DM010SH available for more subdued Mouse House fans. Aside from the phones, Disney also outed the internet-enabled DM001Photo, a 9.4 x 5.6-inch digital picture frame for viewing pictures, videos and emails over 3G for ¥890 (or $11) a month. Although prices have yet to be finalized, the DM010SH is slated to hit the Japanese market in October, while the other two should appear on store shelves by December.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is coming to Blu-ray, starting in 2012

It's official, Star Trek: The Next Generation will follow the lead of the original series and be released in remastered HD form next year. The official site reveals 2012 will actually see two TNG releases on Blu-ray in honor of its 25th anniversary. A single disc preview package consisting of the pilot Encounter at Farpoint, and episodes Sins of the Father and The Inner Light called The Next Level arrives first in January with a $21.99 MSRP, followed by season one later in the year and subsequent seasons after that. All 178 episodes will get the treatment, converted to 1080p with 7.1 DTS Master Audio sound. This is being done by returning to the original film negatives and then recreating the special effects instead of converting them from videotape. Can't wait until then? Check after the break for a (very) quick teaser trailer, or watch the eps in SD one more time on Amazon or Netflix.

TOSHIBA PREPPING NEW 560 MBPS TRANSFER JET CHIP

So, TransferJet hasn't exactly taken off the way many had hoped, especially Sony which crammed the wireless tech into CyberShot cameras and Memory Sticks. But some, like Toshiba, are still holding on to the dream. By the end of January 2012 Tosh plans to ship samples of its new TC35420 TransferJet chip to manufacturers, which can move files at an impressive 560Mbps. The short-range, high-speed sharing protocol could make moving photos, videos and other media between your smartphones, tablets and laptops quick and easy... or it could just become another feature that lies dormant in a few select products collecting piles of virtual dust. It only started showing up in products last year, so we're not ready to put a nail in its coffin just yet -- we'll just have to see if the tech can finally live up to it promise of painless connectivity.

Kindle Fire vs. BlackBerry PlayBook... Fight!

HTC HERO COMING TO US NEXT MONTH WITH WILDFIRE S AND FLYER

Guess what's officially on its way to US Cellular in October? The headline probably gave you a pretty good clue -- it's the HTC Hero S. And it's not coming alone: apparently the new device is big enough to warrant its very own entourage. Its brethren, the Wildfire S and Flyer, will both waltz into stores at roughly the same time. The Gingerbread-running Hero S will offer a 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 CPU, 4-inch qHD (960 x 540) display, a 1,520mAh battery and a 5MP CMOS rear camera accompanied by a 1.3MP front-facing cam. Add it to the lineup next to the Motorola Electrify, and we'd say the carrier's got some good options for the getting. The Hero S will be available sometime next month for $200 after $100 mail-in rebate, while the Wildfire S (which will come in grey and purple) will go for $80 after rebate and the Flyer can be yours for $400 -- once again, after rebate.

MetroPCS takes a good look in the mirror

unveils the LG Esteem

It's easy to get caught up in the wireless major leaguers legal kerfuffles, but let's not forget the little guy. MetroPCS is shipping out a "chic," second LTE handset to surf along its contractless radio waves -- LG's Esteem. Formerly codenamed Bryce, the phone is pretty much the carrier's repackaged version of Verizon's Revolution -- specs, and all that 4G jazz -- but let's not be the debbie downer at this network's party, the handset's packing some solid internals. In case you needed a refresher, the phone runs Android 2.3 with a sprinkling of LG's custom UI atop a single-core 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and includes 512MB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a 1.3 megapixel front-facing / 5 megapixel rear shooter (capable of 720p video capture) and a micro-HDMI port. Your untethered hands can snatch this one up now for $250 after taxes and a mail-in rebate, of course, you still have to opt-in for one of those 4G LTE service plans. Official PR after the break

MICROSOFT AND SAMSUNG SITTING IN A TREE

Microsoft put on its nicest suit when it invited Samsung to the patent-licensing barn dance. Whatever it whispered as the two snuggled close during the slow jams about rescuing the Korean giant from the quagmire of Android litigation, it worked. Sammy has entered into a deal to license Redmond's vast patent archive and, if the rumors are to be believed, it will pay $15 per handset sold for the privilege. (No word on if that includes the $45 million in fees that would just cover sales of the Galaxy S II.) This seems like it could be an implicit vote of no-confidence concerning Google's promises that its acquisition of Motorola would make courtroom drama a thing of the past. There's also a strong reference to the pair collaborating on Mango, and we can only assume that it comes with a significantly less punitive licensing charge in place. Between Android, Windows Phone, Bada and Tizen, it's clear Samsung is hedging its operating system bets. There's a press release after the break, but take our word on it, at no point does it mention Steve Ballmer, lying naked on a bed of money, laughing to himself.

AMAZON KINDLE FAMILY PORTRAIT

And golly, don't they look proud. On the left, the new $99 Kindle Touch. On the right, the new $79 Kindle. And, in the middle, the $199 Kindle Fire tablet. So, which would you rather? If you need more help deciding, check out the gallery, which features the third-generation Kindle thrown into the mix.

ASUS TOUGH 7-INCH HONEYCOMB TABLET LANDS IN JAPAN

Not content with offering up merely modular Android tablets, ASUS has revealed a new seven-inch tablet that's water and dust resistant -- perfect for a spot of bath-time browsing or... desert rallying. The ASUS TOUGH-ETBW11AA has a rubberized bezel and strips across the back, contributing to the substantial 22.2mm profile, but that hefty frame can survive drops from the heady height of 76cm. Aside from its tough-guy credentials, there's a 1280 x 800 screen, five megapixel camera, Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz processor, WiMAX connection and the staple WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS medley. It comes with 16GB of well-protected storage, but there's room for more via microSD. For those seeking a slate that'll survive the bumps and scrapes of the business world -- and not look ridiculous -- it'll be available to enterprise customers of Japanese carrier KDDI this November. No news yet on whether it'll canoe its way across from the Land of the Rising Sun, but we can give you a few more photos of the rough and tumble tablet after the break.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 coming to T-Mobile

See that there? That's confirmation from T-Mobile USA that it'll be stocking the Galaxy Tab 10.1 soon. Unfortunately, there's no word on whether the model it hawks will boast a WWAN module (or if it's just a magenta-hued WiFi edition), but you can bet we'll be keeping our eyes peeled for news as it comes. For now, hit the source link to "Like" or "Pretend to Dislike."

AMAZON KINDLE

Price was one of the recurring themes at today's Amazon event in New York City, and nowhere was that factor more present than with the new Kindle. At $79, this truly is an entry level device, and certainly the company made some sacrifices to hit that price point -- most obviously, the reader doesn't have the touchscreen featured in both the Kindle Touch and the latest Nook and Kobo devices -- though like those products, the Kindle did lose its physical keyboard, giving it a much smaller footprint than the last generation.

In place of the infrared touchscreen are a series of buttons: Home, Menu, Keyboard and Back. In the middle is a toggle button that lets the user scroll through menus -- that activity can be performed pretty quickly with the physical buttons, and flipping through pages is not problem with the familiar buttons on either side of the screen. Where one really misses the presence of touch, however, is with the on-screen keyboard -- typing is performed by clicking one's way through the virtual keyboard, a familiar task for anyone who has ever entered their name at the beginning of a video game with a console controller. Of course, typing is a secondary task on a device like this, so for many users this may not be a deal-breaker. For those who foresee the need for such functionality, however, $20 will buy you an upgrade to the Kindle Touch.

Zeo Mobile turns phones into a sleep clinic

Much like hope, love and Coconut M&Ms, sleep is one of those things that is both hard to live with and impossible to live without. But unlike the first three, it's evidently possible to throw math into the whole "shut-eye" thing. Like it's bedside-based older brother, the newly-announced Zeo Mobile includes a SoftWave wireless headband that wraps around your grey matter as you sleep, reporting on how well your brain is shutting down. Instead of the custom base-station, the data is sent straight to your iOS or Android device and syncs up with the Zeo site to give you the inside skinny on your dreaming. Best of all, the device can wake you at the peak of a sleep cycle, rather than halfway through that dream about Björk and the melting clock. Of course, if you didn't already know that mainlining Red Bull until 3am isn't healthy, then perhaps you're beyond redemption.

SKYPE LATEST UPDATE

Skype update for iOS adds anti-shake, Bluetooth connectivity and ads for freeloaders

Skype's latest app upgrade brings a few substantial features, some good, one not so. Alongside a new anti-shake video call function (limited to the iPhone's back-facing camera), you can now pair Bluetooth headsets with the VoIP calling service, something apparently "long requested" from Skype fans. However, users have to fork out for credit to avoid seeing advertising that's also baked into the new version. The update's now up for grabs on both the iPhone and iPad, though there are reports of a few teething troubles, including missing credit and account details. We've also been experiencing issues, with the app unwilling to play nice with our Bluetooth headsets, though oddly, we can still hear the Skype call ring through. Hopefully we'll see another update that sorts this out soon -- till then, tap the link below for more details, or ogle a bit of smoothed out anti-shake action after the break.

MOTOROLA XOOM 4G LTE UPDATION

process begins tomorrow, new tablets on sale October 13th

Verizon's dangled a 4G LTE upgrade carrot in the noses of the Xoom-adopting hordes from the start. Now, it appears the carrier's ready to make good on that promise. Starting tomorrow, current owners of Motorola's Honeycomb tab can visit a dedicated VZW site for a step-by-step guide through the upgrade process. If you were amongst the eager few who signed up for alerts, the company's going to prioritize you and send out a notification via email. The entire swap-out should take up to six business days, returning a freshly enhanced LTE-enabled slate free-of-charge. As for the rest of you Xoom-less onlookers, Big Red's going to be offering up the updated tablets this October 13th for $499 on a new two-year service contract. Jump past the break to parse through the official presser.

Google Samsung Nexus S Gets Android 2.3.6 Update

Back at the beginning of September the Samsung-made Google Nexus S received an Android 2.3.6 update but caused some issues (with WiFi and USB tethering) and was quickly pulled. The Nexus One successfully received the 2.3.6 refreshrecently and now the Nexus S is getting the update rolled-out again.

The new update is build GRK39F (opposed to the buggy one which was GRK39C) and is still Android 2.3.6, with reportedly working tethering functionality. If you know your way around updating and playing with ROMs (insert usual warning here), head over to the source link to download the update file (GRK39F-from-GRJ22). It appears that you already have to be on GRJ22 in order for this to work.
