SAMSUNG: GALAXY S II | SAMSUNG LATEST LAUNCH | SAMSUNG GALAXY S 2 | SAMSUNG GALAXY | LAUNCH OF GALAXY S II

Do you remember how Samsung took the marketing of the Galaxy S II to a whole new level with the extreme unboxings? Those videos went viral on Youtube, making the Galaxy S II very popular. Since Samsung had a target of selling more than 10 million units of the handset, we were not particularly surprised with the company's marketing strategy. After a series of extreme unboxing videos, the company is now going a step further with plans of sending the Galaxy S II, 20 miles into the sky, or in other words, send the handset to space.

This promotional event for the Japanese market will be held on the 15th of July, and will be watched by millions, courtesy of Ustream live streaming of the S2's space venture. The device will also be seen with live messages and tweets (though we're not sure how that is going to happen in space, where mobile signals don t reach). Google did something similar when the Nexus S was launched, but then defended itself by saying that it was done for merely scientific reasons. Samsung's sole intention, on the other hand, is clearly to gain publicity. Either way, Samsung has been successful in grabbing a lot of eyeballs with the S2. The device sold about 1 million units within a month of its release in South Korea.

The S2 is yet to be launched in markets including the United States, where it is expected to sell like hotcakes. Even in India, the device has made quite an impact with all major online retailers sold out already. With the HTC Sensation's recent launch, things could get a bit tough for Samsung. The Korean mobile maker wouldn't worry about that too much, well for the time being at least. Watch the video demo below to get an idea as to how exactly Samsung is going to do it:

LATEST TECH: EREADER | LATEST E-READER | LATEST E.READER | KOBO EREADER | KOBO E-READER

If you’re curious about the new generation of touchable e-readers, now’s your chance to pick one up just for being a CrunchGear reader. Kobo has been generous enough to donate one of their new eReader Touch Editions for us to give away, and a few gift cards as well. I like the device: it’s a simple, responsive e-reader that would tempt me if I weren’t a scurrilous, paper-loving Luddite. So how do you win?

We want to send this out to someone who’s a book-lover and who really needs it, so send a picture of your bookcase to contest@crunchgear.com, with KOBO in the subject line.Like the one below. No, we won’t use it for anything! On Monday I’ll pick a winner semi-randomly from the entries. Three runners-up will get $25 gift cards to the Kobo bookstore. You must be at least 13 and live in the continental US to win, sorry rest of the world!

No special formatting or anything is necessary, but don’t fake it. If your bookcase is on Google Image Search, I’ll be very disappointed.

ACER: LATEST TABLET | ACER UPCOMING TABLET | ACER TABLET | ACER ICONIC TABLET | ICONIC TABLET | ACER ICONIC TABLET A500

The red pill.

Sturdy build; 10.1" screen; Multitasking; Flash-enabled browser; HDMI port; USB OTG; Reasonably priced

Highly reflective screen; Buggy UI; Quite bulky; Video player lacks Divx \ Xvid support

                          INTRODUCTION , DESIGN

Acer Iconia Tab A500
MRP: Rs 31,515

In the computing world, Acer is known for its good value-for-money laptops. This is what I had in my mind when I first got hold of this Android-based tablet from the Taiwanese manufacturer. The Iconia Tab A500 is a proud member of the elite 10 screen tablets club in India. It also holds the edge of being the first Honeycomb tablet currently available in our country.

Since we're talking about tablets, a comparison with the iPad 2 is inevitable. So, is it better than the latter? Well, there is no obvious answer. It s all about choices; we'll talk about that later. However, one thing is for sure - the A500 is not here to create a problem of plenty for the Android; it's an alternative to Apple s offering.

Unboxing, Design, And Specs

The retail bundle contains a charger and a USB cord. That s it, no extra accessories. The first thing you ll notice after unboxing is a 10.1 screen. The bezel is relatively large, which is good because it prevents unintentional clicks, while giving you a better grip on the device. The gadget looks and feels bulky, weighing in at 730 grammes and having a thickness of 1.3 centimetres. On the bright side, it does have a rugged feel to it.

The entire back is made up of aluminium sporting a brushed-metal finish, which looks stunning and provides additional sturdiness. However, the bezels are all plastic, and the device has a few visible seams where the aluminium and plastic meet.

The power switch is on the left side of the tablet, along with a 3.5 mm jack and a Micro-HDMI port. Acer should have included a Micro-HDMI adaptor in the retail package, but sadly did not. The right side has a power adapter and a normal USB port that can take a pen drive or even a keyboard. A Micro-USB port is present to turn the device into a slave when connected to a PC. Also present is the reset , which can only be triggered by using a pin.

On the top, a volume rocker adapts itself to the gadget's orientation. Another thoughtful addition is an auto-rotate switch, which saves the trouble of hunting for that setting in the menu. There is also a plastic flap, under which is a MicroSD slot. At the bottom is a useless charging dock, which doubles up as an eyesore. Finally, a 5 megapixel snapper with an LED flash and a nicely designed pair of speaker grilles round out the back.

Under the hood is a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and 1 GB of DDR3 RAM. I ve already mentioned the HDMI port, and other features include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, GPS, and a digital compass.

Display

The A500 s LED backlit TFT screen can display up to 1280x800 pixels. The screen is reasonably bright and reproduces colours quite nicely. This makes it ideal for watching movies. Additionally, the device offers an extensive viewing angle. However, the screen is extremely reflective, and even in normal lighting conditions, manages to reflect your face. Needless to say, it almost turns into a mirror in broad daylight, making it useless outdoors. Moreover, the display glass is a fingerprint magnet and gets smudged very easily. I also noticed a large number of dots uniformly placed across the display, forming a grid pattern. I guess these are touch receptors, but Acer should have hidden them well.

The screen is slightly bigger than that of the iPad 2, but in all fairness, the latter is way thinner.

NOKIA ANDROID SMARTPHONE | NOKIA ANDROID | NOKIA SMARTPHONE | NOKIA ANDROID SMARTPHONE PHOTOS | PHOTOS OF NOKIA SMARTPHONE | NOKIA ANDROID SMARTPHONE PHOTOS LEAKED | LEAKED PHOTOS OF SMARTPHONE

This week Nokia has revealed a part of its future plans: the N9, a MeeGo-based smartphone with last year’s hardware specs, but with a gorgeous button-less design, a great UI, nice multitasking capabilities, and a beautiful touchscreen. Soon after that, the Nokia Sea Ray has been leaked, the first Nokia Windows Phone 7 device that should become available for purchase by the end of the year. Now let’s take a look at another Nokia device: an Android-poweredsmartphone.
The Nokia Android device follows the same design pattern as the N9 and Sea Ray, and I’m talking about that pillow shape which impressed many folks. At first sight it’s hard to understand why Nokia works on an Android smartphonewhen it has to focus on both MeeGo and WP7, but the answer is simple: in case the Windows Phone 7 platform fails, then Nokia has not one, but two back-up plans.
Android smartphones are selling better and better, and soon they will overtake Symbian as the most popular mobile platform, and it’s open source therefore it can explore the operating system whenever it wants on whatever it wants.
This Nokia device is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread and it seems like its part of the C-series though that’s not that important for the moment.
The sad part about this story (from Nokia’s point of view) is that Eldar Murtazin was once again right. I remember back when he tweeted that if Nokia’s deal with Microsoft will be a fiasco, then Nokia will finally switch to Android so this kinda contradicts the Finnish officials who’ve said that the Russian blogger’s rumors are getting less accurate.
There is no doubt that this Nokia Android smartphone is only a prototype and that the Finnish-based company is testing the environment, but Espoo should learn how to keep a secret. It already said that it will follow the Apple secrecy-based policy, but that WP7 device was leaked in no time and we know almost everything about it.
Check out the photos below to see for yourself!

MOTOROLA ATRIX 4G UNLOCKED | MOTOROLA UPDATES OF PRODUCTS | ANDROID 2.3.4 ON WAY | MOTOROLA ANDROID UPDATES

The Motorola Atrix 4G is one of the most powerful Android devices of 2011 which was launched earlier this year, however, there’s a major problem with Moto devices: the bootloaders are unlockable. Motorola promised that it will release unlockable / relockable bootloaders by the end of the year so if you own a Moto Android device, then you won’t be sorry. Well, a leaked Android 2.3 Gingerbread build for the Atrix 4G was unearthed deep secrets and it seems like AT&T’s device will be the first Motorolasmartphone with unlocked bootloader.
The build comes from the Chinese Motorola Atrix 4G, however, those who leaked the build didn’t put Android 2.3 Gingerbread up for download. The good thing is that the developers are always working for the community which means that they’ve come up with a way of unlocking your Motorola Atrix 4G right now even if it’s running on Android 2.2 Froyo, and if you’ll proceed, you’ll have to do it carefully as there are some big risks at stake.
You should know right from the start that unlocking your Motorola Atrix 4G will void your warranty and you will lose all your data therefore you will need to backup. Here’s another problem: how to back-up? Well, you’ve got some options including Titanium, My BackUp Pro, and CWM Nandroid.
The Motorola Atrix 4G is powered by a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 CPU, 4-inch qHD 960 x 540 resolution, 5-megapixel camera on the back with 720p video capture, front-facing camera, 1GB RAM, built-in 16GB memory, microSD card support of up to 32GB, Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi, GPS, HSPA+, and a 1,930 mAh battery among others.
AT&T’s Atrix 4G can be paired to a custom designed laptop dock or to a multimedia dock, both sold separately. The Motorola Atrix 4G will get full HD video recording capabilities when the official Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update will become available for download and if a build has been leaked, then you won’t have to wait for too long.

APPLE IPHONE 5 WITH 8 MEGAPIXEL CAMERA | LATEST IPHONE 5 | IPHONE WITH 8 MP CAMERA | 8 MEGAPIXEL CAMERA IPHONE | IPHONE WITH DUAL LED FLASH | IPHONE OF 8 MP CAMERA DUAL LED FLASH

A day hardly goes by without see an iPhone 5 rumor and today doesn’t make an exception as sources in Taiwan claim that there are 3 companies in the country who are potential part suppliers for Apple’s next-gen smartphone. The rumor mill says that the iPhone 5 will come packed with a camera that will feature dual LED flash and that Edison Opto, Everlight Electronics, and Lite-On Technology are the potential suppliers.
Currently, Apple is using the Philips Lumileds LEDs for the iPhone 4 camera and there have been numerous reports that the company has decreased the demand for these parts which could mean two things: iPhone 4 sales are decreasing or Cupertino will opt for other parts from other suppliers like the aforementioned ones.
However, when Apple posted the latest quarterly earnings, we’ve noticed that iPhone 4 sales have increased which is unusual for this time of the year therefore we’re only left with one thing: the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S will feature a 8-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash.
The favorite for becoming Apple’s main supplier for the dual-LED flashes is Edison Opto who is already working with premium brands as it has been in the business for more than 10 years. Everlight Electronics and Lite-On Technology are also established companies, but they’ve only become popular among device vendors in recent years so Apple is looking for the more “experienced teacher.”
The iPhone 5 release date is September 2011 during Apple’s annual iPod Event as the company has missed the deadline at the usual WWDC 2011 event. It is rumored that the iPhone 5 will be powered by a dual-core Apple A5 processor and that it will have a 4-inch touchscreen in order to compete against the likes of the latest Samsung and HTC mobile phones.

LATEST CANON POWERSHOT | LATEST CAMERA | POWER SHOT | LATEST CANON PRODUCT

A good entry-level camera with HD movie recording.

Very compact and lightweight; Easy to use; Ergonomic; HD movie capture; Decent image quality

No image stabilisation; Colours look a bit dull; Slow performance; No optical zoom in movie capture; Price could have been lower

                                                         INTRODUCTION

MRP: Rs 6,995

Affordable point-and-shoot cameras are the best selling products for any company, and this is the segment where they actually earn a lot. It is therefore not surprising that this market is extremely crowded, with each company having several models on offer. Recently, Canon had launched the 14.1 MP PowerShot A2200, which is part of the company'sA-Series range.

Bundle

* Canon PowerShot A2200
* Li-ion battery
* Battery charger with power cord
* Micro-USB data cable
* Utility disc
* User manual
* 4 GB SD memory card

You may have noticed that this camera comes with a slim rechargeable Lithium ion battery, rather than AA batteries commonly used in entry-level cameras. Also included is a 4 GB SD memory card, which allows you to start using the camera out of the box.

                                                                   DESIGN AND FEATURES

The A2200 appears very attractive in its slim form factor, thanks in a big way to Canon's decision to go with the slim Li-ion. The front prominently features the lens with a 4x optical zoom at f/2.8 for wide angle (28 mm) to f/5.9 at the telephoto end. The AF Assist window is present near the centre at the top, while the Xenon flash is present on the side opposite to the shutter button. This is smart placement, because it reduces the possibility of it getting accidentally covered by your fingers. There is enough space to get a firm grip on the camera with the right hand, and it is light and comfortable enough for one-handed operation. You can hold it with both hands for better stability, especially because it lacks image stabilisation of any type. The build quality is very good and there is no sign of flimsiness anywhere.

A major part of the back of the camera is consumed by the 2.7" TFT LCD display, which produces a crisp and bright output. To the right of the LCD, there are buttons for Face SelectPlaybackDisplay (to decide what is to be displayed on the LCD), and Menu (to control the advanced camera functions). A D-pad allows you to sift through captured photos or videos. It also lets you select different settings such as close-up or Macro mode, FlashDeleteElectronic Exposure Values, and Delayed Shutter, which can be set at either 2 seconds or 10 seconds. You can choose other settings too by pressing the OK button at the centre, selecting the setting using the direction keys, and then pressing OK again.

The power button is present rather inconspicuously at the top of the camera. Just beside it lies the shutter button, encircled by a zoom ring with lever. The shutter button could have been made a little pronounced by either making it larger, or giving it a different colour. The zoom lever works smoothly and makes almost no noise when used.

Lastly, there is a mode dial, which lets you select different shooting modes. These include ProgrammableAutomatic,Movie, and also a Live View mode, which allows you to change brightness, vividness, and colour tone in real time. TheEasy mode leaves the user with just the flash control; this is for the novice who doesn't want to be bothered by the camera controls. Other scene modes include FisheyeMiniatureToy CameraMonochromeSuper Vivid, and Poster Effect, with each one being fancier than the last. Also present is a Discreet mode, which turns off all sound effects, the flash, and even the AF Assist light, for silent operation. The rest of the common shooting modes, such as Portrait,LandscapeFireworks, etc are available as always, but there is one extra mode called Blur Reduction, which shoots at 3.5 MP and reduces the blur due to camera shake. Movie mode captures movies at up to 720p HD (1280x720) video at 30 fps.

The battery compartment is present below the camera and the cover of this compartment also covers the SD memory card slot. There is a centrally located threaded tripod mount socket. Since this is made of plastic, it must be used with caution as it is not durable like those made of metal.

The camera can be connected to a TV using an AV cable via the AV-out port. Computer connectivity can be achieved using the Micro-USB cable.

                                                                                         PERFORMANCE

The camera takes around 3 seconds to become fully operational once you press the power button. The average gap between two shots was found to be a slow 4 seconds. There is a noticeable shutter lag between the moment you press the shutter and the point at which the picture actually gets clicked; this was found to be just under a second. This makes it difficult to shoot fast-moving subjects, meaning that you might miss shooting an important moment, such as your kid blowing out the candles on his \ her birthday party.

Ergonomically, the camera can be easily used for an extended period. The buttons have excellent feedback. The overall user interface is easy, even for an inexperienced user. At full charge, the battery is supposed to work for about 280 shots as per official specifications.

Let us now take a look at the image quality.

The A2200 features a 4x optical zoom, which is nothing to write home about, but we can't expect too much from a point-and-shoot camera in this price range.

VERDICT

The Canon PowerShot A2200 is a good point-and-shoot camera for casual use. Since it is very slim and light, you can easily carry it in your pocket. With the Canon UI, any inexperienced user using it will feel right at home. It comes with a lot of features, a few of which are useful, including the 720p HD movie capture capability. The image definition is not bad, but it was found to be dull overall.

The A2200 is priced a bit on the higher side at an MRP of Rs 6,995. We'd rather suggest the A1200 from the same company. It has all the features found in this camera, except for a 12 MP image sensor in place of the former's 14.1, while being priced reasonably at Rs 5,995. It is still able to do everything that the A2200 does, including recording 720p HD movies, and the slightly lower sensor size actually works to its advantage because it results in lower noise in images.
