There's a new twist to the story we told you a couple days ago about the missing iPhone 5 prototype, and while it doesn't bring us any closer to seeing the new hardware ourselves, it does raise some new questions about just what Apple's capable of doing in order to avoid a repeat of last year's hardware leak.
The way we heard things, Apple got help form the San Francisco Police Department, which sent some officers along with Apple's guys to help track down the phone. Now the SFPD says that its officers weren't involved with this, yet the man this group spoke with in their search for the phone says they clearly identified themselves as police. Were Apple employees, or men hired for this task by Apple, criminally misrepresenting themselves as members of the SFPD?
A phone number those men left behind connects to an internal security investigator at Apple, instead of to anyone with the SFPD. So far, Sergio Calderón, the man whose property was searched, hasn't made a complaint to the SFPD regarding this incident; if and when he does, the real SFPD could start investigating just who these iPhone bounty hunters were, and whether or not they did anything criminal.
Update: Now the SFPD is saying that its officers were involved, after all. Make up your minds, guys.
