Apple Testing 2048 x 1536 Retina Display For iPad 3 From Samsung And LG

Apple has begun testing the touchsreen display for its next generation tablet called the iPad 3. Sources in South Korea claim that Apple is working closely with LG and Samsung as both companies have sent samples of their touchscreen LCDs to the Cupertino firm in order to secure a massive deal for the next year.

Steve Jobs’ company is the most sought-after firm as suppliers want to secure their revenue for a year thanks to Apple, who’s products are always selling very well in all markets.

Although Apple is currently engaged in a massive lawsuit against Samsung, it doesn’t mean that the two parties can no longer collaborate. Apple and Samsung have been great friends for many years, but recently they’ve turned against each other due to the Android platform.

An inside source says that Apple is testing two different LCDs from two different companies in order to see which one is the viable solution for the iPad 3. Apparently, Steve Jobs wants quality over costs, but he will take into consideration the power consumption as he doesn’t want a display that “eats” too much battery life.

Also we’re not talking about regular LCDs as Apple is finally switching to QXGA resolution in order to have the edge over rival tablet-makers like Samsung, LG, HP, and RIM.

Samsung is a long-time Apple supplier and it’s sending millions of LCDs, CPUs, and memory chips towards Cupertino so this is why everyone sees it as a favorite to sign another agreement with Steve Jobs.

According to the source, Apple’s iPad 3 will feature a QXGA 2048 x 1536 Retina Display with a 4:3 aspect ratio which will improve reading in portrait mode. As you probably know, it’s not very practical to read ebooks on devices with an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 16:10 in portrait mode so Apple is looking to correct this issue.

Apple follows Motorola’s path who is also testing a 2048 x 1536 touchscreen display with a 4:3 aspect ratio for the Xoom 2, the first Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet, that will become available in early 2012.

The source speculates that Apple will end the touchscreen LCD testing phase by the end of Q3 2011 and it will decide who to pick between Samsung and LG shortly after that.

Many people would have hoped that the next-gen iPad would feature an AMOLED touchscreen, but the source has dismissed this possibility. Apple will not pick OLED LCDs because they are very expensive, cannot provide the best full HD viewing, and have a very short life span compared to LCDs.

Apple has several component suppliers and I don’t think that it will change them now despite the lawsuit against Samsung so that’s why I believe that the Galaxy S2-maker will be the winner of this “trial.”
