Google Shuts Down Google Labs To Prioritize Its Product Efforts

Ever since Larry Page took the reigns from Eric Schmidt earlier this year, Google has been reorganizing its strategies and product focus. One of the measures taken by Larry Page was to shut down Google Labs in an attempt to prioritize its focuses. While the Google Labs projects will not be killed, the website itself will go down as currently there is no point in keeping it.

It sounds really absurd and some people said that the 20% of “free” time from Google will also be gone forever. In a post on its official blog, Google explained that this fact is not true and that 20% of the company’s time and money will be dedicated to new technologies and it will allow developers to make experiments that could bring millions in the future.
Google praised the Google Labs results as many projects turned out real market breakers like Gmail, Google Maps, Google Docs, and Google Calendar. The company was able to test and improve these products “live” without most users even noticing the differences.
Google Labs products will be integrated into other areas of the company, while some of them that aren’t too popular will be shut down for the moment. One of the keys to success is to have your work / products organized and Larry Page wants to adopt this “mantra” now that the “don’t be evil” motto isn’t that cool anymore.
Android users will not be affected by this change as all Google Labs applications available at the Android Market will remain available for download indefinitely and they’ll get updates as well.
Google confirmed that it will continue to experiment and it wanted to make it clear that most people will not be affected by the changes. Well, this is a good thing as consumers do not appreciate when companies change things without notifying the users so even though nothing much has changed.
