Android Code In BlackBerry OS 7

Here's a noodle-scratcher for you: apparently a leaked copy of BlackBerry OS 7.0.0.353 contains a new copyright notice that just might cause you do to a double-take (assuming you're the kind of user who actually takes the time to read through such things). Among the other notices giving credit where credit is due, there's now one for the Android Open Source Project.

The future QNX-based BlackBerry platform coming to its smartphones will need some Android components, thanks to its ability to interpret Android apps. That project is very different from the current BlackBerry OS, though, and there's not expected to be any kind of upgrade path, so why are we seeing Android mentioned here?

The most sensible explanation is that RIM's developers wanted to add some new functionality to the code in this release, and found just what they were looking for, already written, with Android. If that's the case, it's probably just one specific routine, but without the release of some source code, it's difficult to say. Maybe we'll hear more about this, maybe it will remain a mystery, but in any case, you probably shouldn't start getting excited about the prospect for an Android emulator on your current-gen BlackBerry.
