The road to Gingerbread for older Droid devices has been a rocky one this summer. Motorola let us know of its intent to release updates for the DroidPro, 2, 2 Global, and X, but actually getting them out has been a little more problematic. We've seen false starts and buggy releases, along with a fewearly leaked ROMs, and the whole endeavor has seemed a little bit jinxed. Luckily, it looks like the tide may be turning, and we could soon have a Gingerbread update for the Droid 2 headed out to Verizon customers.
The carrier just updated its support documentation for the Droid 2 to reflect an imminent Gingerbread update. This release will bring the phone to system software 4.5.601.A955.Verizon.en.US. As is usual for these kind of updates, there's plenty of device-specific stuff beyond just getting Gingerbread.
There are literally dozens of improvements and fixes included in the update. The phone's notification LED will now display when you get new messages, battery life will get a boost when you're connected overWiFi, and the Droid 2 will now correctly indicate its hotspot status. Location-based features get a number of fixes, including proper compass calibration, and GPS use no longer causing random resets. You'll also find a new launcher dock, an updated version of Blur, and new multi-touch chorded inputs.
Look for the update to arrive sometime in the next few days – possibly early next week.
